april 21, 2018 lévy gorvy, 22 old bond street, london w1s 4py featuring exceptional works by the legendary trio of artists, sigmar polke (germany, 1941–2010), roy lichtenstein (united states, 1923–1997) and (united kingdom, 1936–2011), this is the first exhibition to connect them on the basis of their manipulation of the dot, transforming imagery from the commercial sphere into fine art. taking its title from laing’s 1964 exhibition at the slade school of fine art, london, source and stimulus will highlight certain themes that recur in the works of all three artists, including the space race, sexual liberation, mass consumerism, and politics. this transatlantic consideration of the 1960s pop art movement is both technical and thematic, affirming the enduring relevance of the visual vocabulary they created, in a time likewise shaped by sensationalism in the mass media. navigate_next : catalogue raisonné published february 2017 navigate_next 1936–2011 was one of the leading british artists of his generation. he shot to fame as a student at saint martin’s school of art in the early 1960s and spent most of the decade working in new york. his paintings of film stars, dragsters, and other icons of popular culture place him as a major figure in both the british and american pop art movements. in the late sixties his work became more abstract and sculptural, reflecting the ‘cool’ style that was coming to dominate the new york art scene. a move to the highlands of scotland in 1969 inspired the use of more substantial forms and rugged materials. in 1973 laing abandoned pure abstraction and began modelling in clay and casting in bronze, becoming one of the country’s leading figurative sculptors. in 2003 he returned to painting with his searing iraq war series and images of twenty first century icons such as amy winehouse. search works: the major periods navigate_before navigate_next early pop paintings 1962–1965 navigate_next as one of the original wave of pop artists produced some of the most significant works of the british pop movement. his paintings reproduced images of popular heroes such as starlets, film stars, drag racers, astronauts and skydivers. his 1962 portrait of brigitte bardot is an iconic work of the period and regularly features in major pop retrospectives alongside lincoln convertible from 1964, a commemoration of the assassination of jfk. navigate_next view early pop paintings -- abstract sculpture 1965–1973 navigate_next from 1965 's painting evolved into abstract sculptures using the techniques and materials of car customisation -
